Mathematics is all around us! Children learn best when they can relate what they are learning to themselves or what they are familiar with. For example, from their age to the pattern of the brick work of their home.
Reading and writing are a fundametal part of communication. Like speaking, children will usually pick up early reading and writing by what they see modelled by their parents or carers.
When reading to children, talk about characters, settings and vocabulary. This will help them engage with what they are reading. Why not widen the choices of books to non-fiction texts about things they enjoy. For example, a book about a favourite sports personality. Don’t be limited to the style of text. Try comic strips, poems or magazines.
